Первое: разумеется все они метафоричны, или идиоматичны.

Второе: в них присутствуют слова, обозначающие растения и цветы.

Так говорят о тех, кто добился успеха в профессиональной деятельности. Добраться до верхушки своего дерева означает не что иное, как достичь высот в каком-либо деле .

To bark up the wrong tree

«Лаять на неправильное дерево» — что за путаница? Давайте разбираться. Это выражение означает ошибаться, заблуждаться, быть на ложном пути . Причем же здесь «wrong tree» и зачем на него лаять? Дело в том, что собаки часто загоняют на дерево кошку и снизу на нее лают. Со стороны кажется, что лают они на дерево. А иногда они продолжают лаять, даже если предполагаемая добыча давно уже сбежала. Отсюда и аналогия. Этому выражению даже страничка в Википедии посвящена.

Ну здесь все и так очевидно: family tree = семейное дерево = генеалогическое древо, или родословная .

A branch office

Это выражение переводится как филиал или отделение . Наверняка вам знакомы ситуации, когда компания «расширяется», «разрастается», у ней появляются так называемые ветви, дочерние компании, отдельные организации и т.п.

Отсюда появилось еще одно выражение — to branch out , что означает расширяться, расширять сферу деятельности.

To twig

Существительное twig означает прут, веточка, хворостинка . В переносном смысле глагол to twig означает понять что-либо внезапно или, иными словами, догадаться .

Но с этим словом существует еще одно выражение: the twig effect . Что это? Попробуем объяснить.

Как долго вы продолжаете дело, которое каждый раз терпит неудачу? Как вы определяете тот момент, когда следует остановиться, когда дальнейшие попытки становятся пустой тратой времени? И в каких случаях мы должны упорствовать, а в каких — сдаться?

Представьте, что у вашего дома растет прелестный розовый куст или какое-нибудь другое растение. Вы поливаете его, он каждый день радует ваш глаз. И вот однажды вы замечаете, что некогда великолепное растение вдруг превратилось в абсолютно безжизненную веточку ( «twig» ) с парой цветков. Но вы все равно продолжаете его поливать. «Зря тратишь время» — говорят другие, а иногда и ваш внутренний голос.

Наверно у каждого из нас есть такие «веточки», которые мы продолжаем (или не продолжаем) поливать.

Так вот в один прекрасный день вы выходите из дома и видите здоровое растение, на котором появляются новые великолепные цветки. Значит, слабая веточка оказалась способна на большее. Значит, время не было потрачено впустую.

Это и есть » the twig effect «.

Can’t see the wood for the trees

» Не видеть леса за деревьями » — ничего не напоминает? В русском языке есть очень точный аналог этой идиомы — » заблудиться в трёх соснах «. Кстати, он тоже «зеленый».

To beat about (around) the bush

Это выражение означает подходить к делу осторожно, издалека , иными словами, ходить вокруг да около .

Don’t beat around the bush — get to the point!

To put down roots

Ну здесь, как говорится, комментарии не нужны. To put down roots = пустить корни , то есть закрепиться, поселиться надолго .

This is a beautiful place to put down roots.

И еще одно выражение to be rooted to the spot означает быть привязанным к месту , то есть закрепиться где-либо настолько, что уже практически невозможно передвигаться, как в переносном, так и в прямом значении.

It must be awful being rooted to the spot like a tree.

She was rooted to the spot with amazement.

To get to the root

Раз уж мы заговорили о корнях . To get to the root — вполне понятная идиома, которая дословно переводится как добраться до корня . Здесь сразу прослеживается аналогия: добраться до корня = добраться до сути дела или, как мы говорим на русском зрить в корень .

I need some time to get to the root of the problem.
